ShakespeareMartineau, a top 50 law firm, wanted to invest in the leaders of the future to help drive the firm’s ambitious growth plans.
Having grown organically and also through a number of acquisitions it was also a great opportunity to consolidate the expectations of their leaders to gain a consistent calibre of associates and partners.
At this level, of course time is at a premium, and fee earning is everything, so it is absolutely essential that any training and development activity has significant practical value – we needed to create a flexible programme which would deliver a return on the investment. The time spent ‘away from fee earning’ had to represent value for money and deliver long term benefits.
Part of our solution was to create an aspirational development programme that could lead talented associates through to legal director and from legal director through to partner.
We developed a 12 month programme, of half day modules, run monthly avoiding year end and holiday periods. It’s a highly practical, intense programme providing comprehensive insights into some of the key elements of successful leadership.
The modules cover key aspects of leadership including:
- Strategy, Culture and Values
- Business Development
- Leading People, Teams and Talent
- Communication, Personal Impact and Influence
- Clients, the Firm and Finance
It combines external and internal expertise with opportunities to grow their network through collaboration, thereby giving the attendees the skills and experience to develop as a leader within the firm.
We are now in our third year of partnering with the firm to deliver what is seen as a flagship programme. The selected leaders and future leaders of the business have achieved outstanding results, both for themselves and for their teams.
Each group has worked tirelessly to break down silo working, develop best practice for clients and drive financial performance.
The delegate ‘sponsors’ confirmed that their proteges had all ‘stepped up’, performance and that this had positively impacted the quality of project work the firm was able to undertake. Other benefits included:
